Face Masks

The Hedgehog is Wearing a Mask

I hope everyone is staying safe and staying indoors during this crazy time and I wanted to answer some questions that I have been getting about the new face masks I have been making. Also I would like to offer health care workers needing additional protection for their shifts a deep discount available by contacting me via email.

I wasn’t expecting to make face masks so I am learning as I go and improving upon the design so the information contained here may change with future versions, however I can assure you any changes will be for the better if needed. I chose this design for several reasons based on my experience in the health care field and my previous N-95 certifications that I had to undergo while working for a hospital.

The two primary requirements for any face mask is materials and fit. This design incorporates a minimum of two tightly woven layers of cotton with an interior pocket that can hold an additional filter*, another layer of cloth such as flannel, or a piece of HEPA vacuum cleaner bag (the effectiveness of the bag is outweighed by its breathability). If more protection is needed, it is recommended to add a layer of flannel to provide another thick layer to the barrier. According to the studies and charts I have seen, two layers of tightly woven cotton is what is recommended and provides protection as close to a surgical mask as you can get and still breath easy. As for the fit, the mask is sewn in a pattern that hugs the jawline while curving outward to allow ample space for your mouth and nose. The nose bridge is lined in a soft flannel to ease long term use and contains a braided wire to conform to the nose bridge and provide a tight seal while also keeping glasses fog free. The cloth ties are more comfortable than elastic and provide a more tailored fit while also minimizing ear strain. An adjustable toggle can be added for quick on and off. (* additional filters generally do not provide any more protection against pathogens. Most are activated charcoal to minimize odors/ reduce inhaling particulate common in smog or for allergy relief.)

Health and safety concerns: I personally have been self quarantined since March 17th with limited contact with only essential services so you can rest assured the material is coming from a safe place. As for the effectiveness of the masks, I am making every effort to provide the best and safest materials and I want to state that there is no guarantee that these will keep you from becoming infected. Remember to maintain 6 feet of distance between you and everyone else (if you have trouble picturing 6 feet just imagine your dead loved one laying on the pavement in front of you) and to stay at home! If you have any questions or suggestions feel free to fire away, I have plenty of time now it seems.

I would also like to address those asking me for custom orders and such. At the moment I am making as many masks as possible while still maintaining our standards. When I get to the point where the process is more streamlined I would be happy to accommodate you but until then you would have to offer some serious money for me to consider it.

Thanks and Stay Safe
